» Mechanical Augmentations - Overview «

The Mechanical Augmentations (MA) Lab is what it sounds like: A place to enhance the human form. From eye implants, hearing boosters, organ transplants, or limb replacements, the MA Labs' mission statement is to normalize the appearance of augmentations, as well as to advance our knowledge of the cogworks.

Established in 1989, it was initially funded by a Foundation grant under the name "Cogwork Analytics", it was intended to expand our understanding of the group known as "The Church of the Broken God" (CotBG). Initially structured as an intelligence organization, the department learned a lot through the study and infiltration of the church. Once the grant program was shut down in 1996, the program shifted towards the enhancement of personnel themselves. Using the methods learned from the church, and parts either confiscated in raids or fabricated on site, the lab opened up shop in multiple sites to help improve the lives of personnel through enhancement.

There are a number of positions that are regularly open within the Augmentation Labratory. These include jobs like surgeons and calibrators. In order to advance into one of these positions, one must first be an intern within the department. As an intern, they get placed to observe the daily practices of a number of jobs, before picking a field to go into. Depending on the field, it may require additional education, on top of the basic degree requirements.

As a member of the division, Personnel receive discounts on all augmentations they receive. However, they are warned of the possible risks associated. Along with general foundation regulations, Augmentation Lab personnel are also restricted by the following clause:
«Any personnel whose original body mass lowers beyond 25% (meaning 75% Augmented) will have their department position removed, and be stripped of their foundation rank. This is to prevent a Class-B Bionic-Control Event1.»

After the implantation, personnel are excused from regular duties for 6 weeks. During which, they undergo the following:

Week 1: Initial Acclimation. Personnel are restrained from using the portion of their body enhanced. Be it wearing a blindfold for eye improvements, arm brace for arm enhancement, etc. This is to allow the body to accept the augmentation with as little trouble as possible.

Week 2: Tertiary Acclimation. Personnel are restricted to the medical ward where they undergo base calibration. Personnel learn the ins and outs of their augmentation and how to utilize it.

Weeks 3 - 6: Observation. Personnel are free to move around the facility but are restricted from continuing any department work. This is to reduce the stress levels as much as possible, decreasing the possibility of an ERWIN-MYER Event2.
