» Protocol Laboratory - Overview «1

The Protocol Laboratory (ProLab or PL) is a conglomerate of selected personnel from several divisions with the purpose of establishing and developing containment protocols. Most staff are only temporarily assigned to the division and have specific roles involving their expertise. The permanent staff make up a group of board-certified personnel that have a veterancy status within the Protocol Laboratory.

The Protocol Laboratory started off in 2002 as an unofficial group of experts from several departments. Since then, the purpose of the group has not deviated. It was established with the purpose of developing more sufficient containment procedures using knowledge from all fields. The division was accepted as an official division in 2021 after having rotated at least a hundred personnel.

The ProLab is often acknowledged as the frontline of containment. The division is comprised of a diverse group of personnel pulled from all professions including, but not limited to, researchers, engineers, and ethics advisors. Most of these personnel, however, are only hired by contracts, as permanent staff make up only a low margin. Permanence in the ProLab happens through board-certification. Board-certification is the process where the Secure Containment Protocol Commission (SCPC) announces an individual to have enough experience and contributions to be a permanent member.

The Secure Containment Protocol Commission (SCPC) is a loose board of bureaucrats responsible for coordinating all involved personnel within the division. Its main goals are twofold: To handle both logistics of labor and resources so as to not interfere with the work of specialists and to ensure the efficiency of each Protocol Unit. The SCPC remains in constant contact with other divisions and departments to cherry-pick the best and brightest of personnel. It is also the job of the Commission to review all finalized protocol proposals. Internal requests, staff complaints, and matters of infighting are also delegated by the SCPC to try to prevent AD involvement.

Work at the ProLab is commonly regarded as frantic, stressful, and terrifying. This is due to the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of anomalies. Most ProLab projects involve newly discovered SCPs or SCPs with improper containment methods. It is therefore generally required to work under fast-paced extreme conditions — even for the "safer" anomalies. Working in a Protocol Team is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and is likely the last experience for many personnel. To ensure better safety, or rather, the implication of safety, personnel are encouraged to seek firearms training and receive weaponry from S&C.
